We take a look at “i am justin waite” - a humerous short that was shot only on super 8mm without any editing or postproduction for the 2018 straight 8 industry shootout. We are also excited to announce that Groundglass is a partner of the first Straight 8 shootout happening this year in South Africa!
“I Am Justin Waite” is a hysterical short shot on super 8mm film for the 2018 straight 8 shootout. The film-making competition is also coming to South Africa this year!
Straight 8 shootout is an ad and creative industry filmmaking competition that invites companies to take part in creating 2.5min short films shot only on kodak vision3 200t super 8 film. every shot is taken in story order without editing or post production. because the cameras don't have sound, original sound must be recorded blindly afterwards. any visual effects or titling must be done the old-fashioned way - in camera.
once shot, the film is sent to CineLab London where it is developed. and the first time entrants ever see their films is at the premiere where films are voted and winning companies awarded. the best part - companies donate their prize money to charity!

as challenging as those guidelines sound, one entrant took these guidelines and 'restrictions' and used them to their advantage to create a clever and well directed short - 'i am justin waite' created by iris worldwide.
the hilarious - and somewhat sad - short tells the story of justin waite; a man who suffers from - well... being out of sync.
without giving too much away, the film cleverly uses it's soundtrack (created after shooting the film) to aid narration along with its visuals. you have to see it for yourself to get what we mean.
the film premiered on june 21st 2018 at straight 8's cannes advertising festival screening where it won 1st prize!

South Africa will be part of the global release that sees a shootout in both japan and the USA
