John Lewis 2018 Christmas Ad

"Some gifts are more than just a gift..."

And we have talented copy writers' to thank for that power line.

It's no secret that John Lewis goes out of it's way each year to top its archive of previous Christmas commercials. This year's commercial certainly leaves not a dry in eye in sight.

John Lewis ads have a knack of staying with us. How could we forget the boxer jumping on a trampoline, or a friendship between a penguin and a boy, the tale of a bear and hare (to the soundtrack of Lily Allen's cover of Keane) and to last year's spot - a cute monster like creature under a little boy's bed.

The spot tells looks at the story of Sir Elton John's life to the soundtrack of his 1970's hit, 'Your Song'. Follow the 2 minute spot until the ending where four-year-old Elton runs down the stairs on Christmas morning, to unwrap a gift given to him by his grandmother - a piano.

A present that changed his life forever.

And, for the first time in 70 years, high-end department chain, John Lewis will be stocking pianos. Since the  TVC's release, the set used in the spot is on display at John Lewis's Oxford Street store where customers can explore Elton John's dressing room, recording studio and living room sets from the advert.

The spot makes strong use of motion control, transitioning between the different chapters in Elton's life and whilst it leaves us wiping away the tears at the end... we can't help but feel it's release and timing is uncannily close to the long awaited Freddie Mercury biopic, 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.
